The following are additional facts and a timeline about the life and history of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo:

  • 1475: Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo was raised in Castile, Spain
  • 1502: Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo heard the stories about the New World joined the expedition to the West Indies led by Nicolas de Ovando with Diego Velazquez. The Ovando voyage consisted of 2500 soldiers, settlers in a fleet of 30 ships
  • 1519: Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo is documented as serving under the command of Hernando Cortes
  • Whilst serving Hernando Cortes he accompanied him on his exploration of Mexico and the conquest of the Aztec Empire. Cabrillo fought as a captain of crossbowmen. Hernando Cortes conquered 5 Million Aztecs with less than 1000 soldiers
 
 
  • Cabrillo joined other Spanish military expeditions in Mexico, Guatemala, and San Salvador
  • Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo settled in Guatemala after being rewarded with a grant of land
  • c1530: Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo made a success of his life in Guatemala and became a leading citizen of Santiago
  • 1532: Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo travelled home to Spain where he met and married Beatriz Sanchez de Ortega
  • 1533: Cabrillo and Beatriz returned to Guatemala. They had two sons
  • In Guatamala developed a ship building company and used the ships on the trade routes from the New World back to Spain
  • Antonio de Mendoza, the Viceroy of New Spain, impressed with his reputation, selected Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo to establish a trading route between Central America and the Spice Islands
  • 1542 June 24: The Cabrillo expedition sailed from the port of Navidad with three ships. Cabrillo sailed in the ship called the the San Salvador
  • Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was hoping to discover a route connecting the North Pacific to the North Atlantic. He also hoped, like so many other explorers of the era, to discover the whereabouts of the "Seven Golden Cities of Cibola" - the mythical Seven Cities of Gold
  • 1542 November 23: Winter storms forced Cabrillo to turn back to San Salvador. There were skirmishes with the natives and Cabrillo fell and broke his leg
  • The wound failed to heal and he died on January 3, 1543
