  • King Edward VI was born at Greenwich Palace in London
  • His mother, Jane Seymour, died twelve days afterward giving birth to her son from puerperal fever
  • Had nothing in common with his much older Catholic half sister Mary Tudor
  • He was much closer to the younger Princess Elizabeth who also adhered to the Protestant faith
  • Edward was a sickly child, it was believed that he suffered from from tuberculosis
  • Henry appointed his uncle Edward Seymour the Earl of Hertford to serve as Lord Protector of the Realm and Governor of the King's Person during his minority
    • The age of minority was reached at the age of eighteen
  • Edward preferred his flamboyant uncle, Thomas Seymour, the Lord High Admiral
  • Thomas and Edward Seymour were the brothers of his late mother, Jane Seymour
  • The Seymour brothers disliked each other. Thomas plotted against Edward and was executed on 20th March 1549
  • The young king was a devout Protestant and in 1549 introduced a uniform Protestant service in England based on his Book of Common Prayer
  • Edward Seymour was deposed by John Dudley, 1st Earl of Warwick, and executed in January 1552
  • Ambitious John Dudley arranged for the marriage of his son to Guildford Dudley to Lady Jane Grey
  • Dudley then persuaded Edward to name Lady Jane Grey as his heir
    • Princess Mary and Princess Elizabeth had both been declared illegitimate
    • The next in line to the throne was Edward's aunt, Lady Frances Brandon  who was the daughter of King Henry's younger sister Mary by Charles Brandon the 1st Duke of Suffolk
    • Lady Frances Brandon had married Henry Grey and their daughters were Lady Jane Grey, Catherine Grey and Mary Grey
    • John Dudley believed that Jane Grey would be a 'Puppet Queen' which would allow John Dudley to continue his supremely powerful positionwhen Edward died
  • It is rumoured that Dudley cruelly prolonged the illness of Edward who was in excruciating pain, in order to prepare for the succession of Lady Jane Grey
  • The King eventually died on 6 July 1553

King Edward VI played an important during the Tudor era and in the family history of Queen Elizabeth I. King Edward VI was the much longed-for son and heir of King Henry VIII. He was raised by his governesses and tutors. His father was distant and had high expectations of his son. He was an extremely intelligent boy and excelled at all subjects. He was expected to achieve the highest standards and spent long hours at his books. He had few real friends. He shared many of his lessons with his cousins the Grey sisters -
Lady Jane Grey, Catherine Grey and Mary Grey.Although Edward was King his uncle, the Lord Protector Edward Seymour, held the power. The young king preferred his other uncle Thomas Seymour. Thomas treated Edward kindly and often gave him money, of which he was always kept short of. The two Seymour brothers were intense rivals and Thomas plotted against Edward. The plots led to the execution of Thomas Seymour. His brother Edward Seymour followed Thomas to the block three years later accused of treason. The next man to seize power over the young king was John Dudley the Earl of Warwick. Edward became increasingly unwell and it was obvious that he was dying. Dudley persuaded the young king to name his daughter-in-law, Lady Jane Grey, as his heir and successor to the throne of England. It is rumoured that Dudley cruelly prolonged the illness of Edward who was in excruciating pain, in order to prepare for the succession of Lady Jane. The King eventually died on 6 July 1553.
